Coach Charlie started his Jiu Jitsu journey on his 18th birthday in February 2008 and was immediately addicted. He joined an MMA team in Redding, CA and focused on fighting even throughout his time in the U.S. Navy where he continued his training in Connecticut and Japan. When Charlie returned from his tour he met his first Jiu Jitsu black belt and would drive an hour up the mountain everyday to train. In 2015, he moved to Las Vegas with a dream of training alongside the best athletes in the world. His dream was soon realized when he ran into (now 25x UFC vet) Evan Dunham. The two quickly hit it off and Charlie signed to his gym the following week. After 6 months with Evan, Charlie submitted a blue belt world champion at a local Naga tournament and Evan gave him his blue belt the following day. Dunham Jiu Jitsu was once one of the biggest jiu-jitsu academies in the city and was home to some of the highest ranked athletes in the sport. After Charlie’s promotion, Evan suggested that he join the competition team in the morning run by Masters World Champion Rene Lopez alongside multiple time World Champion Mikey Musumeci. In 2019, Charlie received his purple belt and in 2020 the Dunham Jiu-Jitsu academy sadly shut down during the pandemic; the team was split amongst five gyms throughout the city. Charlie continued to train with the Musumeci crew till his brown belt at the end of 2022. After years of technical guard play he decided it was time to focus on his wrestling and top pressure and develop his own style - Kingdom Jiu Jitsu! He bounced around the city training with Combat Jiu Jitsu Champion Gabe Checco, Michael Alvarez’s Cobrinha Jiu Jitsu, Xtreme Couture coach Bryce Harley, and the infamous Shapiro Brother’s, the head Jiu Jitsu coaches of Syndicate MMA. In his time in Vegas, Charlie had trained with many other World Champions and world class athletes including Roberto Jimenez, Renato Canuto, Gordon Ryan, Dan Ige, Fredson Paixao and many more. He even helped coach his close friend, UFC’s Roxanne Modafferi. Coach Charlie cornered Roxy in both the Brown Belt Masters World Championship & Black Belt National Championship; Roxy won both and went undefeated with Charlie in her corner! It was time for him to receive his black belt from his close friend and former Dunham Jiu Jitsu teammate Scott Macey, but they were undecided on who Charlie would be affiliated with. That’s when he ran into (UFC featherweight and 4x BJJ World Champion) Fredson Paixao while training at Syndicate MMA. Fredson recruited Charlie to his association and had him takeover as the head coach at one of his academies. He awarded Charlie his Black Belt on January 20th 2024, 3 weeks shy of 16th year anniversary. For Coach Charlie, signing as Fredson’s newest black belt was just the beginning. In May of 2024 he left Vegas and he and his wife Eden bought a house in Oklahoma and began looking for a location for his academy; they found it in Yukon. Coach Charlie now runs Kingdom Jiu Jitsu Academy full time!
